Frame rate

The number of individual frames captured per second. Standard video is 24fps or 25fps. Higher frame rates like 120fps are used for slow-motion playback.

Shooting at a high frame rate and playing back at 24fps creates beautiful slow motion, a staple of high-end music video production. The more frames captured, the smoother and more cinematic the slow motion appears.

Frame rate in the real world

Beyonce’s Crazy in Love (2003) uses slow-motion footage of Beyonce walking away from an exploding car. The sequence was shot at a high frame rate and played back at 24fps, stretching a moment that would last half a second in real time into several seconds of screen time. Slow motion in this context transforms a stunt into a cinematic character moment.
