A shot where the camera operator holds the camera rather than mounting it on a tripod or dolly, creating a more naturalistic, slightly unsteady movement.
Handheld adds grit, energy, and a documentary-style immediacy. It is a deliberate stylistic choice that makes the viewer feel present in the moment. Overused it can feel chaotic; used well it adds authenticity.
Handheld shot in the real world
Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit (1991), directed by Samuel Bayer, used handheld camerawork throughout the gymnasium performance sequences. The barely controlled movement matched the song’s explosive dynamic and made the video feel like it was filmed at an actual show rather than a controlled set. It is one of the defining visual choices of early 1990s alternative rock.
