A shot captured by a camera mounted on a drone, typically aerial footage showing landscapes, locations, or performances from above.
Drones have democratised aerial cinematography. What used to require a helicopter is now achievable on a fraction of the budget. Drone shots are great for establishing locations, revealing scale, and creating dramatic overhead perspectives.
Drone shot in the real world
Before affordable drones, aerial shots in music videos required helicopter hire, which was prohibitively expensive for most budgets. Guns N’ Roses reportedly spent over one million dollars on November Rain (1992), and helicopter aerials were a meaningful portion of that budget. Today, a licensed drone operator can achieve comparable results for a small fraction of the cost, which has made aerial sequences accessible to independent artists for the first time.
